setting synthetic hair

Today in the lesson we had the opportunity of setting our synthetic wigs. this is in preparation for our timed assessment next week friday.

synthetic wigs are usually made of animal hair or plastic, so in order to curl it one needs to set it and steam it in order to get the desirable style.

what i used

Red and yellow rollers
Tall comb
Denim brush
Hair pins

how to

Starting from the the crown area section the hair in small to median size and start setting in a break work motion till the nape of the hair. When you reach the nape of the hair then section that area in three the middle and both sides. for the middle section, continual to set the hair doing backwards all the way to the back of the hair line. For both side start setting the facing outwards and forewords.

in this pic is when i started to set the hair
completed the setting of the hair and was ready for stemming

As i was setting my wig today i found it really time consuming. Setting synthetic wig is a lot more difficult that setting a full lace wig. the one thing that was most difficult was the sectioning of the hair, this was because of the way the wig has been made. However at the end i was able to get the hung of it and it become simple. Today was the first time i have ever used a hand held stemmer to steam the hair. usually i would boil water and then dip the set in it and hold it in for about 10 second then remove it, this method of quicker, however i found using the stemmer to be much more safe.

Today in Helen's lesson, we were introduced to different hair pieces. above is two of the hair pieces that i got to use, a ponytail peace and a weave peace.

some of the other hair peaces that we got to look at were,

  • Lace wig
  • Facial hair

Lace wig

Lace wigs are individually made by hand using a knotting technique creating multi directional hair styling with a natural flow. lace wig can be custom made for an individual, by measuring the there head size and melding there head shape. in Hellen's lesson we got to see some of the lace wigs she has made for specific people. some were small and some were large

hair piece (toupee and weave)

this is a Toupee

.

toupee, its a small artificial hairpiece use to cover boldness, mostly used by men. Toupees are essentially hairpieces which are used to cover patches of baldness. while wigs are meant for the entire part, toupees are only meant for specific portions. Also, while wigs are more intricately designed in line with the desired hairstyle, a toupee maybe nothing more than a patch of hair that simply covers the said portion which is balding.

The size and spread of toupees is in direct proportion with the extent of baldness; the more bald one is, the more likely that a larger or widespread toupee would be. And as far as genders go, traditionally men have been the once to use it more due to the fact that more men than women tend to go bold, but off-late we find that there is a veritable range of toupees meant for women as well. when we go back to the ancient Roman era, we find that there was considerable humiliation or at least a feeling of disgrace associated with being bald. It is this feeling of humiliation which drove demand for toupees in a really big way. In fact even before the Romans, one can note that the Egyptians too were prolific when it came to adoption of artificial means for covering their bald parts. With toupees being a natural extension to be used. Interestingly the first instance ever of an ancient toupee was found in a tomb in Egypt.

And specific to the Romans, leaders like Julius Caesar being strong proponents of toupees who used it himself to hide his balding head. Over time, seeing their leader sporting a toupee, others followed suit with vigor.

one of the ways to add extension in your hair is by adding it in tracks. Today i did a weave in my spear time using human hair extensions. the extensions that i used come in already fixed into the wefts and all i had to do was sow it into the hair. To do this i sections the hair in small sections and cornrow the hair using expressions hair (synthetic hair used to cornrow), then using a nodal and thread i sowed the the weave in to the cornrow. This was done to add length to the hair
